2009 RECORD: 80-82, 3rd in NLCentral

It was not a good year for Milwaukee last year, as the 2008 NL wild-card team took a major step backwards. The Brewers offense was not to blame, as they saw big seasons from Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun, who together knocked in 255 runs. The pitching, on the other hand, was one of the worst in baseball,  with a starting rotation ERA of 5.37, leading the team to finish under .500 for the first time in three years.

Stat table note: The better the ranking number, the better the stat, in all categories. For example, for the SO cat for hitting, a #2 ranking means that the team tallied the second fewest strikeouts. For the BB and SB cats for pitching, the #1 teams allowed the fewest bases on balls and steals.

LINE-UP

  1. Weeks, Rickie 2B (wrist, should be ready for spring training)
  2. Escobar, Alcides SS
  3. Braun, Ryan LF
  4. Fielder, Prince 1B
  5. Hart, Cory RF (fingers, should be ready for spring training)
  6. McGehee, Casey 3B
  7. Zaun, Gregg C
  8. Gomez, Carlos CF

The Brew Crew will be scoring runs again this year lead by Braun, Fielder and Hart. The question once again will be can Rickie Weeks stay healthy? Weeks was off to a career year before going down with a wrist injury last season. He will be healed and ready to go this spring, making him one of the biggest high-risk/high-reward players come draft day. Last year, the Brewers only had 68 stolen bases. Look for that to change this year, as new center fielder Carlos Gomez and young shortstop Alicides Escobar should be busy on the base paths and could each steal 30+ bases this year. Keep an eye on Mat Gamel, another big power prospect who could produce big numbers if he can win the 3B job or take it over if Weeks gets injured again (and McGehee shifts to second).

STARTING ROTATION

  1. Gallardo, Yovani RHP
  2. Wolf, Randy LHP
  3. Davis, Doug LHP
  4. Suppan, Jeff RHP
  5. Parra, Manny LHP (shoulder, should be ready for spring training)
  6. Bush, Dave RHP
  7. Villanueva, Carlos RHP
  8. Narveson Chris LHP

The Brewers starters were ugly last year and only had one bright spot in Yovani Gallardo. Gallardo had over 200 Ks and was the only starter with an ERA under 5, at 3.73. Milwaukee signed lefties Randy Wolf and Doug Davis this off-season to help Gallardo in the rotation. Wolf is coming off a great season, but look for his ERA to jump now that he is out of LA. Davis had a respectable 4.12 ERA last year in Arizona and could post similar marks this year. Manny Parra has great stuff and is a great strike out pitcher, but the wheels came off the bus last year, including a trip back to the minors. Parra is out of options and should lock up a spot in the rotation. Don't be surprised if he breaks out this season, like Ervin Santana and Oliver Perez have in the past.

BULLPEN

  1. Hoffman, Trevor RHP
  2. Hawkins, LaTroy RHP
  3. Coffey, Todd RHP
  4. Stetter, Mitch LHP
  5. Villanueva, Carlos RHP
  6. Vargas, Claudio RHP
  7. DiFelice, Mark RHP
  8. Lofgren, Chuck LHP
  9. David Riske RHP (elbow, outuntil at least June)

A lot of people didn't think Hoffman had much left in the tank at over 40 years of age, but all he did was churn out one of his best seasons. Hoffman converted 37 of his 41 save chances and posted a 1.83 ERA. The Brewers added to their strong pen by picking up free agent set-up man LaTroy Hawkins this off-season. Hawkins had 11 saves and a 2.13 ERA in Houston last year. Milwaukee will have a deep pen, as Todd Coffey and Mitch Stetter both had over 20 holds last year. Rule 5 Draft Pick Chuck Lofgren has a good shot to make the bullpen this year as a second lefty. If he is able to put it together he might even get a crack at the rotation.
